SAMURAI
Beyond the Sword
The Balance of Bun & Bu
In the Japanese samurai's pursuit to master arms and arts, they left a legacy of beautiful objects which embody both aspects. Their dedication to portray an ideal balance of military and artistic skill is evident in exquisite weapons and armor shown side-by-side with paintings, poetry, noh theater costumes, and objects for tea ceremonies.
“Renowned for his elegant pursuits, he is a complete man combining arts [bun] and arms [bu] . . .” —Hosokawa Yusai (1534–1610)
